Along the Charles

Sitting on a park bench in the shadow of the Longfellow Bridge this afternoon I was most intrigued by the two birds - one atop each turret. I wonder what kind of pecking order is involved to claim such a prime seat. Is there a sign up sheet? Is it the same bird every day? Do they have fights to the death each day to determine who is top bird? How early do they have to get up to claim the spot?

What happens when they go on their lunch break? Does the whole process start all over again?

Or maybe they're perfectly civil about it all. Taking turns. Maybe I'm assigning the worst of human behavior to these innocent birds. Though - I've seen some pretty nasty fights break out at the beach between two gulls doing battle over one french fry.
